Biting flies have followed me everywhere. Growing up in NJ, horseflies gathered outside our screen porch in summer. At the beach, greenheads ruined clamming expeditions. And here in upstate NY, it's deerflies. You can swat them and curse them, you can even put a deerfly trap on your hat to trap them. But you can't outrun them. Turns out biting flies can travel at speeds in excess of 14 mph.
But they're not the fastest insects. That title belongs to dragonflies who can jet along at over 35 mph.
And cockroaches? They can scuttle at almost 3.5 mph. Typical walking speeds are between 2.5 to 4 mph you need to move get moving to avoid contact.
