July 21 through July 29 is National Moth Week. I've registered my event -- which will be private and involve nothing more than wandering around my backyard garden, observing the moths that flit around my patio lights and lanterns.
This is an easy and fun citizen science project that needs to special equipment. Just turn on your porch light and take a look! Use a field guide to identify the moths you find in your backyard.
Of the 160,000 species of moths worldwide, over 11,000 call the US home. Moths are closely related to butterflies but have feathery instead of club-like antennae. Most but not all are nocturnal.
