Monarch Butterfly Watch

The milkweed is starting to flower here in Ulster County NY. I've seen a few bees checking out the flower and that's great. But not a single monarch. It's a long trip from Mexico to here for a creature that weighs no more than a paperclip. And 2018 has been another bad year. According to the National Wildlife Federation, their numbers are down 14% this year for a total decline of 90% in the last 20 years.

Try planting milkweed in an area of your yard or garden. It's an important food source for monarchs. Feeling parental? Learn how to raise your own monarch butterflies at home.
